During Victorian times the village of Shrub End stood isolated from its larger neighbour, the town of Colchester.  The village had its own church, chapel, schools, two mills a smithy and shops

One of the earliest records of the ancient manor of Shrebb dates from 1272 but the history of the area goes way back to the Iron Age and the Roman invasion.   Ken Rickwood’s interesting book describes all this plus the more recent development of the parish right up to the present day
