Walking the Stour: An Essex River
The life-story of the River Stour is in three different counties – its birth is in Cambridgeshire whilst the rest of its existence is in either Suffolk or Essex, and for most of the time both as it forms the border between those two cousin counties. Often though it is described as a “Suffolk River” why so? The countryside of that county, and in particular the area known as Constable Country, is often celebrated. But what about the “other” side? The Essex side, the southern bank (some of which is also Constable Country). This book contains a series of walks which trace the lovely river from a little bridge where it enters the county of three swords, all the way to the sea some fifty miles distant. Along the way it passes through rolling countryside, historic landscapes, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (plus other areas which should be so defined, but are not) and a myriad of interesting villages and towns. This is the tale of a journey with a river always to your left, the River Stour – an Essex river.
