This year (April 2025) there is a new Odyssey film called The Return with Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche. To deepen your understanding of this epic tale we have a 4-week course with David Huggon including a copy of THE ODYSSEY by Emily Wilson and ‘serve yourself’ coffee & tea

I retired three years ago from the Colchester Sixth Form College where I taught Classical Civilisation A level for 30 years. I have been an enthusiast of the ancient world ever since I was a teenager and a great devotee of Homer. My degree (back in the dark ages) was in Classics and French.
Contents of the course
There are 24 chapters or “books” in The Odyssey.
From week 2 onwards you will be asked to read 8 books in advance of the class
Week 1
Introduction to The Iliad as background + discussion of who Homer was
Week 2
Discussion of books 1-8 with a few extracts read in class.
Week 3
Books 9-16
Week 4
Books 17-24
+ discussion of how The Odyssey has influenced the Western world
in film, art and literature
