Summer of Spying by Sarah Armstrong

Exclusive print edition available for our customers

We are thrilled to be involved with this exciting project by one of our favourite local authors, Sarah Armstrong.

Not everyone who is called for jury service gets given a case. When Sarah Armstrong, received a jury summons during the lockdown, she assumed the trial would be cancelled, but it went ahead. Once the case was concluded, Sarah conducted her own online investigation to answer the many questions she was left with about authority, surveillance and belonging.

Here, Sarah details the prosecution and defence evidence presented in court and explains how the experience shaped not just her understanding of what it means to serve on a jury, but also how it exposes the extent to which our modern life is under surveillance.

This last year has been difficult in so many ways. But the response to Corona Virus has demonstrated that it is possible to make enormous changes very quickly – if the importance of change is recognised. We have seen how quickly our air can become purer and  our streets quieter and safer. What can we learn from this year as we look at the important issues facing us globally.

For ten, violent years the Wars of Religion have raged across France. Neighbours have become enemies, countless lives have been lost, and the country has been torn apart over matters of religion, citizenship and sovereignty.

But now a precarious peace is in the balance: a royal wedding has been negotiated by Catherine de’ Medici and Jeanne d’Albret, an alliance between the Catholic Crown and Henri, the Huguenot king of Navarre. It is a marriage that could see France reunited at last. Meanwhile in Puivert, an invitation has arrived for Minou Joubert and her family to attend this historic wedding in Paris in August.

A breath-taking novel of revenge, persecution and loss, sweeping from Paris and Chartres to the City of Tears itself – the great refugee city of Amsterdam – this is a story of one family’s fight to stay together, to survive and to find each other, against the devastating tides of history . .

Following on from the Sunday Times number one bestseller, The Burning Chambers, Kate Mosse’s The City of Tears is the second thrilling historical epic in The Burning Chambers series.
