Tuesday 23rd October, 5 pm
Biographer, social historian, author, lecturer and award winning travel writer, Lucinda Hawksley will talk about the extraordinary women she has studied and written about. Her latest book, ‘The Life of Katey Dickens’ is a biography about the daughter of Charles and Catherine Dickens.
A talented portrait painter, Katey Dickens was born into a house of turbulent celebrity, growing up surrounded by famous (and infamous) people. Compelling and illuminating, she redefines our preconceptions about Victorian women.
Every time she has published a biography, Lucinda Hawksley has been asked, ‘Wasn’t she ahead of her time?’. Why is it that history gives us such a narrow opinion of Victorian women. In her biographies of artists Lizzie Siddal, Kate Perugini (nee Katey Dickens) and Princess Louise, Lucinda discovers three truly fascinating and unconventional women. Join Lucinda to discover the careers, lovers, intrigue and scandal hat marked the lives of these three extraordinary artists.
