Matin's new book 'Selected Works' (with a forward by Germaine Greer) is currently printing, and we are hoping to have copies available on the night.

Xiaolu Guo - Essex Book Festival 2008

13 March 08: 8pm at Colchester Library

Xiaolu Guo’s first novel in English, A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers, was a big success and short-listed for the Orange Prize for Fiction. It is a romantic comedy about two lovers who don't speak each other's language. Xiaolu Guo studied film at Beijing Film Academy, worked as a screenwriter and film teacher as well as writing several books in Chinese. She has directed award-winning films including The Concrete Revolution and How is Your Fish Today. Xiaolu moved to London in 2002.



Kaffe Fassett - Essex Book Festival 2008

15 March 08: 2.00 pm at White Notley Village Hall

Fassett's work has attracted a considerable following. His work was the subject of a 1988 one-man show at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the first time a living textile artist had such a show there. The show proved so popular that it was successfully converted into an international travelling show that visited nine countries.

A prolific author of over a dozen books, Fassett concentrates on teaching the color and design stages of craftwork rather than the construction stage. In addition to his books, he has hosted craft-related television and radio programs for the BBC, including his own show, Glorious Color.

 

David Hewson - Essex Book Festival 2008

17 March 08: 2.30 pm at West Mersea Library

His latest book Garden of Evil is the sixth novel in the Italian crime series featuring Detective Nic Costa. An art expert from the Louvre is found dead in Rome in front of an unknown Caravaggio masterpiece. Tragedy strikes when Nic starts to investigate. David Hewson has written seven novels as well as a number of travel books. He is also a Sunday Times columnist.


Susan Barker - Essex Book Festival 2008

Alan Sillitoe - Essex Book Festival 2008

4 April 08: 8 pm at Colchester Library

March 2008 marks the eightieth birthday of Alan Sillitoe, author of at least two twentieth-century classics, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. Both books broke new ground in fiction and provided the basis for hit movies, the former launching Albert Finney's career as a film actor.

Alan Sillitoe has written some forty works of prose, poetry and drama including two volumes of autobiography. In 2001 he published Birthday, a sequel to Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. His latest work of fiction is A Man of His Time, the story of a womanising Nottinghamshire blacksmith. Gadfly in Russia, published in 2007, relates Alan’s travels through Russia over the last forty years.

Lindsey Davis - Essex Book Festival 2007

Iain Banks - Essex Book Festival 2007

March 07: Iain Banks will be appearing at 7.30pm in the Mercury Theatre. Acclaimed writer of both fiction and science fiction, to include reading from his new novel ‘The Steep Approach to Garadale’ (published 12th March). Part of the Essex Book Festival. Andrew Taylor - Essex Book Festival 2007

March 07: Andrew Taylor will be appearing at 2.30pm in the Prettygate Library. One of the best new crime writers. ‘American Boy’ was a Richard and Judy pick. ‘A Stain on the Silence’ is his latest psychological thriller. Part of the Essex Book Festival. December 06: Richard and judy had the honour of Pete and Sarah's presence at a celebrity book event in London. According to Sarah in particular - "I enjoyed rubbing shoulders with the celebs" The event attended by Ricky Gervais, Michael Palin and Billie Piper saw renowned Independent booksellers review coffee table books released for christmas.

November 06: Barbara Erskine did a signing session at the library for her new book Daughters of Fire. This was a very successful event in partnership with Essex Library Services.

Autumn 05: The Gruffalo team of writer Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler visited the shop and made a lot of children very happy. Every child got not only a signature in their book but also an individual sketch from Axel!

Terry Pratchett first visited Red Lion Books way back in 1989. He was so impressed with the reception he got that he’s been back three times since then most recently in spring 2005 to mark the publication of ‘A Hatfull of Sky’. He has since cut down on his touring schedule but we’ll keep inviting him to make another trip to Colchester.
